Fred… the most annoying thing since The Annoying Thing.
When the announcement hit the web that a Fred movie was in the works, I knew the apocalypse is close. Seriously folks, who are these over 50 million viewers or so who seem to enjoy this high-pitched disaster of a show about a tantric 6-year old? It was funny the first few times when it was new, but since he’s gone mainstream, Fred Figglehorn has become the Antichrist. It is interesting to note the age gap in viewer ship. Reportedly the vast majority of Fred viewers are under 18, most of these girls. Fred silently rose on viewer ship, surpassing in subscriptions even such Disney products as Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers. Before anyone knew what was happening his videos had hit over 50 million views and the end of the world was near.
On the other hand, Lucas Cruikshank, the 16 year-old who writes and performs the character of Fred is a genius. Either that or just plain lucky. With a few simple camera moves, a few minor editing techniques and silliness beyond compare he has created an absolute YouTube blockbuster and reportedly garnered over $100k in ad revenues alone, not to mention TV appearances, T-shirt and doll sales.
Is there a future for Fred? Let’s hope it’s short lived and the very talented Lucas can move on to more interesting projects…
