Lost & Found

Absolute Disaster seems to be a group of young film makers bound to making us laugh, no matter what.

lostandfound001They’ve done just that with The Crew and seem to have taken off some time from their busy schedule of having a life, shooting The Crew and godknowswhatelse, to do a brief parody show called Lost & Found.

But parody of what? I’m guessing the mystery genre, which has always left itself wide open for spoofing, what with cliches and over-used plot-lines.

With plenty of experience in shooting comedy at a fast pace and excellent timing, these guys managed to whip up a quickie to confuse us just enough to be amused. With all the awkwardness of first-time web-showists long gone, they didn’t even bother with a real story or even character development. They simply tossed a few peeps into a single room, handed them a few Kafkaish lines and circumstances and a banana and went with it.

The result is very amusing in a confusing “WTH?!” sort of way. We never really find out what is going on, who does what why and where. Each episode is just about a minute long, and at only 5 episodes to the show, it makes for a quick viewing.

The acting is enjoyably over-the-top, which is an obvious prerequisite for parodies. These guys seemed to have plenty of fun shooting this: how often do you get to shoot someone with a banana, and try to make it look dramatic?

The photography was professional, as were editing and especially music. The score is marvelously dramatic with its proper high-notes and comedic cues.

The script couldn’t have been more than 5 pages, but Brett Register did a passable job with these abstract lines that seem to go nowhere and indeed do. At a few points my attention-span skipped to “Huh?”-mode and I started to wonder why I was watching this in the first place. But by the end I had to admit this utter nonsense was quite amusing. The ending (if indeed that was the ending) was as abrupt and confusing as Python’s Holy Grail, leaving us to wonder if the story goes on or if indeed we just spent 5 minutes of our time watching… a show about nothing.

But as we all know, A Show About Nothing can be quite entertaining.
