The creators of this show claim to be a simple husband and wife team, out to make a small mocumentary with a handheld camera, some mikes and a tiny crew, and then went ahead and “taught themselves editing”.
I don’t believe it.
The acting, editing and writing are fluent and tight, and the overall feel of the show perfect. They may claim to be semi-amateurs, but we will not believe them. These two are professional, and there is no denying it. Much may also have to do with the fact that the lead and show producer, Stephanie Faith Scott signed a contract with SAG to have her new show under the SAG Internet Signatory Agreement (a move not yet widely spread in web series circles). She wanted to hire the best talent she could find, and hire them she did. The supporting cast is wonderful and each episode brings about a new face and new talents.
The Retributioners is about a woman’s quest to seek validation and revenge on everything from ex-boyfriends, former friends, people who stole her taxi, and everything in between. In each episode she faces down another demon from her past and finds some pieces of her self-esteem along the way. For the most part they are mere confrontations to seek a sort of personal redemption that then always launch into a spree of witty banter and caustic come-backs (for those with sensitive ears, you may want to watch out for a few brief instances of [explicit] language). I admit I was hoping for at least a tad of slap-stick comedy as she makes her foes go through certain humiliations Home Alone-style. But that is just me. I’m evil. Stephanie is more diplomatic (and I use the term loosely of course) and challenges them to a clarification of their actions and possibly an apology, thus reflecting desires we all have had at some point in our lives and giving us a chance to live vicariously through her revenges.
Stephanie is charming, and how it is possible that anyone could mistreat her is unimaginable. Hence the question arrises how many of these situations are pure tales out of the pen of her very talented husband/writer/director Eric Rasmussen, and how many are truly taken from her past. After all, inspiration stems from somewhere.
That reminds me, whatever happened to that lovely girl that treated me like a dove treats a statue a few years back? After watching this show I feel like look her up…
