Buck Rogers in the 25th Century

We’ve been waiting for this for months now, and finally the trailer is out!
Executive Producer James Cawley and the crew behind the Star Trek fan-show New Voyages – Phase 2 secured the rights for the classic Buck Rogers with The Dille Trust months ago and now they finally have got a teaser to show for it.

From the looks of it and the comments from Cawley himself it seems that the show will follow more in the footsteps closer to the comics instead of the classic serial, and certainly more accurate than the motion picture from the 70-80s and the subsequent NBC TV series: very likely no Mel Blanc’s “bidi bidi bidi, what’s up, Buck?” If you, like myself, grew up on this TV show and the robot TWKE-4, then this could both come as a shock and a relief. I for one will be missing the ridiculously delicious 80s babe Colonel Wilma Deering, played to tight-flight-suit perfection by Erin Gray. Wonder whom Cawley chose to fill that suit now…

What does remain from the 80s show is Gil Gerard himself. Cawley announced that veteran television and screen actor Gil Gerard would be joining the cast of the new Internet version as a series regular, and will also serve as Co- Executive Producer.
Gerard played Buck Rogers in the theatrical release, which premiered in March of 1979 and became one of the highest grossing pictures of that year. He then went on to star in the NBC television series, which ran from 1979 through 1981.
Gerard recently visited Retro Films Studio, where he met with Bobby Quinn Rice, who has been cast as the new Buck in the web-series production. Gerard offered Rice advice and his best wishes during their meeting, essentially passing the torch to the new Buck Rogers.

Like the production company producing Frontier Guard, Cawley and his crew are leaving their Star Trek roots behind and impressing their fans with a new and original series, and hopefully adhering to the roots of one of the classics in sci-fi. Principal photography began last week so we can expect the show to debut in late 2010.
But be warned Cawley: this-here critic is a big fan of the serial classic as well as the 80s version, so unfair comparitions may occur!
Bidi bidi bidi!
